Fleet Reports

  • Portland by Tony Norris: Doing well. Ten boats regularly.
  • Hood River by Tina: Average four boats. Hood River fleet shows lot’s of promise for the future with four or five teams looking for boats. It’s been very windy this year, possible discouraging some teams.
  • Vancouver by Richard Spencer: Ten to twenty boats out on Tuesday nights. More than ever before. The Viking Club is traveling. Note: The Viking club has been a big part of the Vancouver Tasar fleet for years, but due to insurance problems the club boats could never leave Vancouver – now they can.
  • Seattle by Cathy Sherwood: April clinic: 13 boats showed up and many new. Thursday nights 5 to 10 boats regularly.
  • Vancouver Island by Todd Blummel: 11 boats total in the fleet (Todd owns four).

RICHARD SPENCER’S WORLD BEAT:

ISAF class: Motion by Richard to make Tasar ISAF recognized class.

Presentation: About $2.50 to 3.00 to register. Various regions are interested in joining, but there is a $700 to $800 application fee. Among other things the ISAF gives the Tasar fleet the right to call "International Regattas" "World Championship." Note the ISAF must approve any changes in class rules. This could have positive or negative implications. John Evetts pointed out that this could increase the awareness of Tasars.

The motion to join was seconded and passed.

NEW BUSINESS

Crew weight: Motion put forward to eliminate the minimum weight rule.

Discussion: Small crews (like Japanese) want to eliminate the rule since they feel disadvantaged (by carrying extra weight), big crews (like Australians) want to keep the rule because they disadvantaged without the rule. The NA Tasar fleet, after racing without the rule for the last three years could not verify that smaller crews have an unfair advantage and voted for eliminating the rule. Motion seconded and passed with two votes against.

ISSUES OF DISCUSSION

Scale for boat weighing: Motion forwarded for Todd Blummel to investigate, advise the cost and other implications. Motion seconded and passed.

Minimum Hull weight: Do we want to lower the boat weight to 140 lb?
Discussion: Boats currently built around 140 lb. Most older boats are significantly heavier. A lot of the NA fleet still races in older boats.
Motion put forward to direct Richard Spencer to advise International Committee that NATA is in favour of 150 lb.

Motion seconded and passed with two opposed.
